Retro Comes Back Full Steam Ahead.

I’m working on making some chiptunes and getting into the scene, and that means eventually buying another oldschool DMG (the original, brick-like gameboy) and fixing the two NES consoles I have sitting in my room (I’m suspecting it’s the 72-pin connector.)

But what if I wanted something a bit more awesome than just the look of a regular gameboy?  Well, thanks to seeing a certain tutorial thread on chipmusic.org, I’ve discovered this and more:

BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE!

Thretris is an artist who has always had a feel for the retroactive stylings of lo-res and pixelated images from my generation’s classic gaming era (as seen on his flickr account.)

One thing I found particularly awesome, of course, is the fact that many of his DMG-model pieces still display the original Game Boy logo and button labels.  How does he do it?  Well, apparently it’s a specific type of paint.  While most paints would normally cover it, apparently this specific kind of Krylon-brand paint just gets absorbed into the plastic, and the dye in the text of the DMG isn’t soluable enough for the paint to dilute.

Bored with handhelds?  Well then look at the work he’s done on these NES Consoles:

Bonus points from me on the kill bill console.

He doesn’t just do painting, either.  He’s done modifications such as back and frontlighting a handheld (Backlit or frontlit GBC?  YES PLEASE,) adding in RCA jacks and creating a custom keyboard for LSDJ users, like so:

Things like these are works of art in an entirely new fashion;  Its retroactive origin brought into a shiny, new conceptualization is something that simply leaves one in awe;  It leaves me wondering what else is out there, yet to be discovered in this small but growing musical genre.  It looks like we’ll find out, ladies and gentlemen, when the time comes.
